EXHIBITION NOTE
우리는 여러 대상들을 단면과 그림자들로 전체를 유추하여 속단하는 경우가 많다. 지금 내가 보고, 알고 있다고 생각하는 것들이 과연 옳다고 확신할 수 있을까. 인지에 대한 의문과 확신에 대한 경계는 작가 장인주가 가진 주요한 삶의 태도이자 자신을 움직이게 하는 동력 중 하나이다.
<도시, 그림자>에서 작가가 보일 사진 안에는 대상의 단편과 그림자가 담겨있다. 이는 프레임에 온전히 담기지 않은 대상을 간접적으로 유추할 수 있는 단서가 될 수 있는 동시에, 본 모습을 왜곡하여 실제와는 다른 모습을 보여주고 있을 가능성을 함께 담고 있다. 이러한 양면성은 장면에 새로운 의미를 부여하며 이야기를 풍부하고 새롭게 만들어준다. 이번 전시를 통해 작가가 도시를 거닐며 마주친 그림자를 바라본 시선과 그 이야기에 귀를 기울여보자.
We often jump to conclusions in identifying and comprehending objects through their shape and shadow. However, can we be certain in trusting our senses to objectively define the world? The boundaries that divide such uncertainties in perception is what Jang In Joo considers to be of his motivation and compass through his life and work.
The photographs within the exhibition <City, Shadow> embraces the perimeters and shadows of subjects. It allows a subjective interpretation to fill in the incomplete, and at the same time question the possibilities of manipulation and abstractness. Such contrast adds various definitions to the work and heighten the sense of imagination. Let us perceive the urban collage of shadows and objects through the artist's perspective.
